?

Samsung offers the Galaxy S4 in Germany for the time being only in the variant GT-I9505 using the Snapdragon processor 600 (codenamed Krait 300) at Qualcomm. This SoC has next four CPU cores on the Adreno 320 graphics core with 400 MHz. When and if the variant GT-i9500 (four Cortex-A15 and Cortex-A7 four-cores) comes with the Samsung Exynos chip octa to Germany is not yet clear.

Here, the Snapdragon 600 is anything but a bad choice, especially since this is clocked with the Galaxy S4 depending on the workload of up to 1,900 MHz (to be precise: according to benchmark tools are at our sample 1,890 MHz). So that the CPU is superior to the Galaxy S4 only by the clock forth other high-end smartphones. So the HTC one used likewise to 600 Snapdragon, but it works with up to 1.7 GHz. Although Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 has been in the program, which will operate at up to 2.3 GHz and a 450 MHz GPU has (Adreno 330), but this is not yet included in any smartphone or tablet currently available. Here, however, one must remember that the Snapdragon 600 is very similar technically the older Snapdragon 4 Pro, this is for example the “Google Phone” Nexus 4 from LG, Sony Xperia Z or the Asus Padfone 2 to use and works with 1.5 GHz.

How much

the clock advantage of the Galaxy S4 brings, we have tested in practice and benchmarks. First of all: Despite faster CPU and Android 4.2.2, it comes with a hectic operation of the S4 to the usual mini-stuttering. This has been seen in just a Kneifgeste on the home screen (called a thumbnail view of all home screens on). However, these jerks are only fractions of seconds and do not restrict the work with the Galaxy S4.

In most benchmarks, Samsung’s top model then presents its best side: So it reached 2.0 in the browser market with the dashing (and pre-installed) Chrome in our test 2,209 points. This reflects, among other things, the high clock, because the HTC one with the same CPU but less 200 MHz maximum clock supplies (also very good) 1,919 points. The Xperia Z is expected to be virtually on par with the HTC one, since both use the 600 with 1.7 GHz Snapdragon. By comparison, Nokia’s high-end Lumia 920 smartphone with Windows Phone 8, after all it brings to 1,702 points. The Galaxy S4 must only beaten by the iPhone 5, which is almost entirely in the combination of iOS 6.1.3 and Safari with 2,265 points in the lead.

When

GFXBench (formerly GLBenchmark) pulls the Galaxy S4 contrast to all other previously tested smartphones by: For our tests we use the HD scene Egypt. In order to ensure equal opportunities, we use the offscreen test to ensure that all smartphones have to take the test at 1,920 x 1,080. Here, the Galaxy S4 reaches 41 fps. When HTC one there are 37 fps and the iPhone 5, only 29 fps.

The Mark X is the base S4 just before the HTC one: there are off-screen test 8.01 instead of 6.04 fps. One has to remember that there are of course also arrives in smartphones to more than the mere stroke: Also connection and driver (optimization) play important roles. However the 3D Mark A Tie: The S4 gets to 11.145/6.728 points (Ice Storm Fighters / Fighters Extreme Ice Storm). When HTC one there are 11.466/6.701 points. Thus, both high-end smartphones are well geeinget despite high Full HD resolution for visually demanding games.

The display of the Galaxy S4: Not beyond any doubt

The Galaxy S4 currently used as a single smartphone 4.99-inch full-HD display with AMOLED technology. Away from any theory (Pen-Tile or not): Thanks to good black level and a pixel density of 441 ppi enormous picture quality is impressive. But the AMOLED screen is not perfect: Compared to the screens of the One and the iPhone 5 a (weak) color cast we noticed. The sharpness advantage of the HTC displays of over 468 441 ppi (after the display has the same resolution, with 4.7 inches but slightly smaller), however, is hardly noticeable.

AR coating is relatively good, but the environment is something more than Reflects the HTC one. Practically, however, that the display (like the Lumia 920) recently can operate with normal gloves. This worked relatively well in the test itself with thick sports gloves. However, this feature must be specifically activated in the settings menu.

reports some users on a slightly “muddy” picture we could not confirm in our test pattern.

A major criticism of the Galaxy S3 was the plastic housing, which ensures a low perceived value and a mediocre feel. When Samsung Galaxy S4 does have added a structure, but this is purely visual: the front and back of the plastic smartphones are still very smooth. Who hopes for an improvement over the S3 will be disappointed. Nevertheless, the S4 is secure in the hand and is surprisingly non-slip. With the perceived value of iPhone 5 and HTC One can not keep up but Samsung’s flagship. Another problem: Because the frame around the large display is so narrow are the key for “Back” and “Settings” very far down and are therefore difficult to reach with the one-handed operation

.

However, the plastic housing also offers advantages. Unlike One, iPhone 5 or Nexus with the Galaxy S4 4 You can remove the back and use as a micro SD card or the strong 9.88 Wh battery (2,600 mAh) change. In addition, a micro SD card can be used. However, this is necessary because of the 16 GB “big” built-in memory, the user has only 8 gigabytes are available.

Another advantage of the plastic back: The S4 is not as warm as the HTC one play. Here, the aluminum case is apparently for a brisk heat dissipation -. Well for the SoC, but bad for the user’s hands

The camera of the Galaxy S4: No compromise

Already

the Galaxy S3, the photo quality was very good. The 13-megapixel camera of the S4 is even better. Especially the colors we like better than the HTC one. In addition, it is amazing how much still brings out the S4 from the recording in low light conditions. Even the front camera, which is neglected by many manufacturers, makes great pictures with the Galaxy S4. Overall, the S4 from all previously tested smartphones offers the best picture quality and is in our test scene even before the Lumia 920

Like its predecessor, also comes with the Galaxy S4 Samsung’s Touchwiz interface to use. Especially in comparison to the simple, elegant sense 5 surface of the HTC one does this quite colorful and playful – but color and design are a matter of taste. The current version of Touchwiz offers some features that we like. This includes the extensive quick-start overview of the Notifications panel, comprises of many features quickly and easily turn on or off. We liked also that you simply can put the phone on the screen to pause music or video playback. In addition, videos can be regarded as a small window on the actual app – good for multitasking fans who want to watch a video, for example, when writing. The 4.99-inch display is just big enough to use this feature halfway sensible. However, our software is multi-window highlight. Thus, two apps can be displayed simultaneously and used in parallel. This is currently among other e-mail app, browser, Youtube, Gal lery, Google Maps, or SMS app. MultiWindow so well suited to write, for example, a mail while you surf on a web page because you want to copy multiple text into the mail there, for example. However: All this is already, for example, with the Samsung Galaxy S3 or Note 2 and can be implemented with other Android smartphones partly via apps or custom ROM

.

new features, however, left a mixed impression: In addition to the already available SmartStay now (display stays on when the front camera detects that one looks at the screen), Samsung has incorporated a new feature: When playing a video, and the look turns away from the device, the video is paused. This worked when tested with normal room lighting but only virtually every other time is also new Smart Scroll. This is for example the user can scroll in a web page, he tilts his head up or down. This worked in the test unfortunately only sometimes. If you hold the phone in your hand, the usual scrolling by finger movement but always succeeded in significantly easier. Although it has recently become possible with the S4, we have never had to take a photo in the smartphone everyday the need simultaneously with main and front camera.

Conclusion: Galaxy S4 test

The Galaxy S4 is one of the best smartphones that you can buy at the moment, but there is not no competition at the top: When you put on a high-quality housing and a simple elegant software interface value, you are correct on the HTC one. Purists, the simple operation and the largest app selection are wanting, still the best hands in the Apple camp. However, the strongest competition for the S4 is its predecessor, the Galaxy S3 is indeed on display and performance a little weaker but still a very good smartphone and it now costs only 350 euros. For the S4, however, you pay at least 600 euros. Even with a contract can usually save very little. The S4 is and will remain an expensive premium smartphone.

for a final assessment of battery life, it is unfortunately still too early. We will examine how the S4 beats the long-term test.
