Fall in the Snapshot Shootout ! To assess how well the camera of the Galaxy S4 really is, we allow them to camera comparison compete and represent our great Special to the photo sensor of the Samsung Galaxy S4 the predecessor of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the great competitors this year, the HTC One over.

One of the main areas of current smartphones is photography: Even if you still can not shoot images at the level of SLR cameras with smartphones, the top models now achieve quite the quality of digital film cameras and down the country used between the snapshot . In the Android camp of the 8 MP sensor of the Galaxy S3 was last year as the measure of all things. This year, however, he was challenged not only by his immediate successor Galaxy S4, but the HTC one that comes up with fewer but larger pixels and thus should show a lighter and leaner image noise. We have the test done on the example -., And compare the picture quality of Samsung Galaxy S4 Galaxy S3 and HTC one in different situations and scenarios

Note: We have, unless otherwise listed, always use the “Auto” setting. On the Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 firmware XXEMB6 was installed on those S4 GT-I9505 with the version number XXUAMDM, on the HTC One finally the software version 1.29.401.12. We each have used the maximum-possible resolution. This photos with the Galaxy S4 required in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Good lighting

The HTC one does in this situation at first glance the best picture, especially the structures on the rocks, it works out well. However you zoom closer, you will notice that HTC apparently works with a sharpness filter in post-processing and fewer details are available here actually. The Galaxy devices provide a more uniform overall picture, but the Galaxy S3 acts in color in comparison to the S4 a little pale.

good lighting conditions (zoom)

In this picture, the one, well, original memorial in Berlin Wedding shows with the best spring weather comes the latent yellowish HTC One of his mega-pixel boundaries, as seen on the metal struts. The Galaxy S3 and S4 show even more clearly in the zoomed, much more detail, such as the leaves on the trees in the background. But even on the shot from the Galaxy S4 Photo (Whole Image) it is clear that megapixels alone do nothing -. The lawn and the leaves in the background muddying despite 13 MP resolution

backlight

easily photographed against the sun giraffe house at the Berlin Zoo has the “most colorfast” by the fore on the Samsung Galaxy S4 photo. Once again, the S3 is a little pale, while the HTC device recorded a while visually appealing, but color is not the reality view.

Macro

poorer color rendering of the HTC one is to blame in this picture compared to the mundane fact that pushing a cloud in front of the sun at the moment of the photo. Otherwise, the cameras of all three devices make pretty nice macro shots, although that in the enlargement (see below) back out to the higher resolution of the Galaxy devices.

low light

In this area the HTC one wins well ahead of Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4. Like last year with the HTC X Taiwanese are fed up with low-light shots forward, as clearly seen here at the sidewalk and the trees on the roadside. Whether this is only due to the ultra-pixel technology or in part to skillful post-processing, is difficult to assess.

HDR

Each of the tested devices has a special HDR mode, but the results differ significantly. While the Galaxy devices HDR interpret and combine classic images with different exposures into a brighter and more detailed overall picture, the HTC one but rather tends to overexposure.

front camera

The front camera of the HTC One has the largest viewing angle. That’s practically a rule, such as when you want to take group portraits or video chat with up to three people, but can sometimes lead to distortions on the screen. In this example, this is not the case, here you can easily see how much detail and the quality of the 2 MP front camera, the most aggressive sharpening disturb something. The Samsung Galaxy S4 with its 2 MP front camera is something but not far behind – not quite as wide-angle image looks only slightly overexposed in the background. The 1.2 MP front camera of the Galaxy S3 can not compete and must, both in terms of detail and in terms of exposure, the counterparty clearly beaten.

video recording

The advantage of the higher resolution of Samsung smartphones is not logical to wear when shooting 1080p video. HTC knows not only with a great general image quality, but also with the better image stabilization to score. However, all three devices in the video recording does not take much. That the microphones in the HTC One are excellent, we already know from another context. In the soundscape of a main road, this advantage is not so good effect, but the recorded sound from the HTC device seems slightly better than that of the Galaxy S4 and significantly better than that to be the Galaxy S3. For this, the HTC one has significant problems in the automatic refocusing (we have deliberately touch-to-focus renounces in favor of comparability). Finally, the S4 know little noise on, but we could not reproduce after shooting.

Conclusion

in all disciplines at least good – this is the photo of the Galaxy S4 summarize performance, which is why it is also deserving winners of place in our comparison test. Even though the HTC one in some areas has the edge, in the constricted Samsung Galaxy S4 still the best camera phone package. HTC is trying to gain with tricks in post-processing advantages, unfortunately, the aggressive sharpening by software has a negative effect on the overall image quality. Here the HTC one has no means a bad camera, particularly the low-light performance is second to none. In addition, the One has a much better and faster photo app. Despite the ultra pixel marketing the low image resolution is problematic, especially in optimal light conditions and viewing the zoomed state of the Galaxy S4 captures more details.

same is true for the Galaxy S3, even if it “only” has an 8 MP sensor. It is striking in any case that the S3 still keeps up very well in most situations, the HTC one is slightly ahead and – apart from the camera – the Samsung Galaxy S4 is not lagging behind too much. Anyone who has a Galaxy S3 and S4 boasts views clueless, may be, at least in terms of the camera, feel reassured. Too with the Samsung flagship of the previous year, you can still shoot excellent photos
