iPhone 5 and Galaxy S4 HTC One and Xperia Z to Lumia 920 and Optimus G: In the current smartphone camera is now one of the most important features. We have just mentioned the six models of Apple, Samsung, HTC, Sony, Nokia and LG compared with the test lab. The older models Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC X + were to compare it yet.

Unfortunately we make the mobile phone manufacturers a spanner in the works when it comes to systematic camera tests. So the iPhone does not allow, for example, set the ISO sensitivity to mimic poor light conditions in the laboratory. With the HTC smartphones, there is this setting, but unfortunately it does not do what it promises – despite the fimware updates. And it is also possible in the One and the One X + no systematic measurement.

Therefore we have for now decided to shoot in automatic mode. Thus we obtain all phones with results that match the lighting conditions from daylight ago. Unfortunately it is not possible with the laboratory test, just the light to turn darker to simulate low light conditions. For a reliable analysis by the software of the test structure must be illuminated with at least 1200 lux. A systematic test, which simulates low light conditions, therefore, must be different – this and we are therefore still REPLACE

    .

The test field we have ever listed above, here we show you again all smartphones at a glance.

Manufacturer Apple HTC HTC LG Nokia Samsung Samsung Sony
    model iPhone 5 One One X + Optimus G Lumia 920 Galaxy S3 Galaxy S4 Xperia Z
    Price from 575 € from 580 € from 420 € from 455 € from 390 € from 335 € from 550 € from 490 €
    resolution 8 megapixels 4 megapixels 8 megapixels 13 megapixels 8 megapixels 8 megapixels 13 megapixels 13 megapixels
Image Stabilization digital optically no no optically no no
    no

The best values ??at the measured resolution reach the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Xperia Z – no big surprise, but they both have 13 megapixel sensors. The LG Optimus G with the same resolution falls behind from clear.

the 8 megapixel smartphones, the iPhone 5 is by far the front: It trumps the Optimus G and almost reached even the 13-megapixel rivals Galaxy S4 and Xperia Z. Behind the iPhone 5 finally lined up Galaxy S3 and Nokia Lumia 920 at a level one. Propping up the older HTC X + and the HTC one. That the HTC one is the last place here is no surprise: after all, it has by far the lowest resolution sensor

. Here are 100-percent To see excerpts of the various smartphones – the HTC one we tested with old and new firmware. The higher the resolution, the more the image is zoomed cutout. But more pixels does not mean zwangsläufigerweise more details.

What does this mean in practice? The higher the resolution, the more details are visible in the photos. However, it bring Full HD TV in just 2 megapixels, and even the retina display on the new MacBook Pro is “only” four million pixels dar

Whoever looks at his cell phone photos so only on the TV, the notebook display or the smartphone itself, which can ignore the resolution. Important, however, is the pixels number for those who want to edit the pictures, or want to use excerpts reprinted the images in large formats.

Here we have the cutouts of the higher-resolution smartphones scaled down to the level of the HTC one. The differences are sometimes extreme, and much higher resolution phones are significantly worse off than the One.

at this point is still a comparison between the measured values ??and the real results interesting. The Xperia Z falls in the laboratory by a high resolution, may not necessarily shine in real-life situations however. One possible explanation is that cameras are partially optimized by manufacturers to the laboratory tests in order to achieve better results here.

is interesting in this context, the relatively high kurtosis value of the Xperia Z. This measurement gives an indication of how strongly screwed the camera during data processing to the photos. The contradictory results may, for example, a natural consequence of certain edge sharpening algorithms or the like – we want to make Sony intention not

    .

addition to the resolution, we also have the color fidelity of the smartphone and its performance measured in the white balance.

the white balance test results provide insight into how well the camera is able to analyze the color temperature of the current light conditions – and the colors in the image correct fit. Here are the two Samsung smartphones on the most accurate, the box follows without too great distance and without huge outlier. Only the Nokia Lumia 920 has problems in the test and supplies from image to image and color casts in some cases significantly different results.

During the white balance means a shift of all colors, the color fidelity is (DeltaE) on how accurate the smartphone meets the individual colors.

Here are a few scaled-down To see excerpts from our photo studio test scene.

that “accurate” is not necessarily “nice” to be equated with, however, is another matter. Many buyers and HTC-One tester complained about the boring action photos. The nachgeschobene of HTC firmware update makes for prettier because higher contrast and more vivid little picture, but worsens the measured values ??in the color reproduction. The iPhone 5 cuts this way, with the worst, but, as I said, does not necessarily unsightly photos.

Again, the picture changes again in low light conditions – especially in dimly Tungsten many cameras tend to get yellow or green stitches on the photos. Behave like the various smartphones here, it is also to be verified.

The dynamic range of a camera tells you how well this copes with high contrast scenes – ie motifs that have high brightness differences. Cheap snapping usually have a low dynamic range. Thus it happened to you that the really bright blue sky on a photo at a time displayed is only ugly white.

The following comparison image differences in the dynamic range also demonstrated quite impressively. To make here is the pink flowers of the tree, which are illuminated by the sun. The dynamic range of the camera is too low, parts are overexposed and thus imaged white.

If the pink flowers of the tree are overexposed and thus knows the evidence of a poor dynamic range.

In assessing this image a little caution. We had to leave namely lack of manual settings for aperture and exposure time when taking on the automatic with the smartphones. And so unfortunately there are small differences in the overall image brightness. With a total light-exposed image, it comes naturally faster to overexposure in the flowers.

However, the observations made in this cover photo pretty well with the laboratory-measured values ??concerning dynamic range: At the top here, the two Galaxy smartphones and the iPhone, the HTC one found at the end of the field again

    .

In good lighting conditions, the smartphones have fortunately hardly struggling with noise. Therefore, this topic is also in this “daylight-comparison test” is not as explosive. Only those who look closely and at high magnification, with many shots can make some noise even at low sensitivities.

It will be exciting but then when we perform our tests for low light conditions. Because the darker it is, the more marked the further noise. And here might have a few candidates that cut rather average in daylight, still give neat gas – the HTC one and the Lumia 920 have here also with its optical image stabilizer still a trump card

    .

laboratory tests provide finally a few values ??for the lenses. Although these are more for the “right camera” with zoom and / or iris interesting, but for the sake of completeness we want this area will also touch on briefly.

We measured here the vignetting / vignetting, lens distortion and color fringing. Fortunately, there are no outliers, and great all tested devices move at a reasonable level, which can also be seen in the photos shot by us.

    Each

smartphone camera has its strengths and weaknesses. On the whole, however, the Galaxy S4 I like best. It provides clean and detailed photos. In addition, the dynamic range is very neat.

As already mentioned: the conditions under which we tested here correspond daylight. Therefore, no inference is it possible to propose how the various cameras in low light. In a near future following low-light test, the balance of power could reverse so quickly. If you shoot in daylight, but is likely to have already found his favorites.
