Mixed feelings: HTC One Mini in hands-on - derStandard.at

The Taiwanese electronics manufacturer HTC has much to be praised Android flagship, the HTC one, shrunk as expected. Recently, the unit has now been officially launched as HTC One Mini and passes via the mobile operator A1 soon after Austria. The WebStandard had the opportunity to take the smartphone under the magnifying glass.

Schrumpfkur

To justify the name, the Mini One takes much lighter from a display diagonal of 4.3 inches. The resolution was mitgeschrumpft, instead of Full HD 1280 x 720 pixel are offered – which gives a decent pixel density of around 342 PPI. The Super LCD screen with Gorilla Glass scratch-3 shot is able to impress the way, as well as that of the “normal” HTC One -. Brilliant colors and high brightness with very good contrast

Instead of a quad core CPU HTC sets in this machine on a dual-core CPU in the same series, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4. There is a GB of RAM and 16 GB Onboarspeicher. 132 x 63.2 x 9.3 millimeters, the device measures in quite light weight 122 grams. On the back of a four-infected MP strong “ultra pixel” camera on the front is 1.4 MP.

The battery is rated at 1800 mAh is pre-installed Android 4.2.2 with the already known from HTC Sense 5 One-Oberfläche.Dazu HTC also served here in stereo speakers with “Beats Audio”-boom sound. In addition to standard connectivity features, the device also offers a working in Austria LTE modem.

Attention, pre-series

The following lines must be sent something first: The test sample, it was a pre-production model. While the device is therefore likely to be finalized on the hardware side as far as possible, especially software-related aspects have to enjoy this short test with caution. In addition, always ran during operation, the monitoring program with Tell HTC.

ergonomics and processing

Visually, the HTC one mini a good impression, it is in principle nothing more than a shrunken version of his great model. The white plastic edge acts on the second glance unfortunately quite cheap, but does not feel like that. The trim and the back are still made of aluminum. Overall, the phone is well made.

its very compact form, the One Mini sits well in the hand. The rear bulge makes it a little more ergonomic in the hand, however, sides and back are not very slippery. The power button and volume control buttons are very flat against the body and have a little tactile feedback, so they can be difficult to palpate. Under prolonged computational load the phone at the upper part of the back is uncomfortably warm.

Fast, yet smaller Trailer

In everyday operation, the device presents generally fast, but in between there are noticeable performance degradation with slight imperfections. In the all-Antutu benchmark reached 11,150 points this round – about the level of the S and HTC One half as much as the One. In Vellamo is a remarkable result of approximately 2,300 meters in the HTML5 test to Beech, only slightly less than the “big” version. The latter is confirmed by consistently liquid surfing performance.

In terms of graphics performance, the 2.5 mini-screen test of the GFX-Bench provides just liquid in Egypt HD 24 frames per second. It should again be remembered that this is an unfinished version of the Mini One, a detailed review of a trading model is planned.

The Sense interface is still a matter of taste, but as many settings and menus do not differ significantly from the default UI does not include the familiarization difficult. Just some little things (long press on the Home button launches Google Now instead of the task manager) interfere appreciably.

Convincing acoustic

In initial tests, the HTC presented as – for a smartphone – successful music machine. The integrated stereo speakers do a great job and also deliver higher volumes but still decent sound, albeit with fallweisem noise. Every now and then caused the otherwise noisy operation of Beats Audio minor problems in the form of volume fluctuations.

Rather disappointing result from first snapshots (see example image), the colors have been good, but act detailarm and washed out. It remains to be seen how the camera performs on the final version.

battery as a possible vulnerability

A long-term test of the battery was not yet possible over the test period. As far tried to make the rather small sized 1,800 mAh especially in LTE mode rather negative impact. The Mini One is receiving strong pleasant both in terms of radio network and Wi-Fi. Where the stereo speakers shine, the telephony speaker of the test device but unfortunately yielded only average quality from.

Preliminary Conclusions

preproduction HTC One Mini left us with mixed feelings. Despite strange choice of materials for plastic components, the device is well made. It brings a top display and for its device class with very good audio quality. Performance Technically, it is well below the HTC one, but managed nevertheless everyday tasks easily.

smaller ergonomic problems fall into the category of “bearable”. Worried after the first glance battery power, camera and telephony Acoustics – absolutely essential points for a smartphone. Whether the skepticism is justified remains to be seen if the final version of the Mini One has reached the market and the web standard editors.

early August launch the HTC phone in Germany and will shortly also be available through A1 in Austria. The manufacturer’s price is 449 euros. (Georg Pichler, derStandard.at, 21/07/2013)
