With Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and HTC One diving, among other devices, at least two blockbuster among Android smartphones until further no longer in the benchmark Toplists 3DMark on. To let trickery manufacturers the devices appear more powerful in benchmarks than they actually are

: reason.

the sense and nonsense of benchmarking apps can argue admirably, but the fact is that under Android such tools as Antutu, CF-Bench, GFXBenchmark or the 3DMark from Futuremark are useful at least to the performance potential of devices together to compare. Unfortunately, there are always cases where hardware manufacturers are trying to gain unfair advantages in common benchmark apps.

Such trickery function basically quite simple: If the correspondingly adjusted by the device manufacturers operating system determines that a benchmark app is running, it is either power resources at their disposal that would otherwise not receive the device in everyday life (for example, a higher clock ) or there are certain features, such as compute-intensive graphics improvements, switched off, which may soar the performance, but the image quality is degraded. For years you knew such practices only in the field of graphics cards for PCs, with the ever-growing need for quantifiable performance in mobile devices is tricked but also in smartphones and tablets increasingly.

was recently announced that the Samsung Galaxy S4 a CPU and GPU clock retrieves during the term of benchmarks at a height, the usual, with only a few exceptions, is never available to the system. That achieved benchmark results may reflect a realistic picture of the power spectrum of the device in this way, is on the hand.

Many smartphone manufacturers cheat on Android benchmarks (investigation / table: Anandtech)

This scandal went further, because in addition to contact Samsung and other manufacturers such practices to. So Anandtech found out in October that also HTC, LG and ASUS outwit with various devices benchmarks, albeit in varying degrees and in varying benchmark apps. A white vest had by all investigated devices, however, only the Nexus devices, the models from Motorola and Nvidia gaming platform Shield.

Futuremark, the makers of the system-wide benchmarks 3DMark, now draw conclusions from the scams: With immediate effect devices from their own leaderboards are locked, where the fraud could be detected in 3DMark. In a press statement it says (translation by us):

people rely on that Futuremark benchmarks produce accurate and unbiased results. For this reason, we have clear rules for hardware manufacturers and software producers who can not specify how they interact with a platform with our benchmark software. Simply put: A device must be running our benchmarks without adjustments, just like any other app also

.

If a device is suspected of breaking these rules, it is removed from the lists. 3DMark scores of no more listed equipment should not be used for comparison with other devices. Unlisted devices appear without score at the end of the 3DMark Device Channels and the best mobile devices list on our website.

According to Anandtech cheat only HTC and Samsung in 3DMark, although more companies are guilty in other benchmarks. Let’s hope that the manufacturers understand the shot across the bow of 3DMark and future refrain to optimize their device specially designed to benchmarks out.

Various devices from HTC and Samsung have been caught cheating and dive into the 3Dmark top list to just the end – marked “unlisted”

the “Machinae non grata” are then also several “high-caliber”: the HTC one, One mini, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in the Exynos as Snapdragon variant and also the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 in 2014 respectively to variants with Samsung and Qualcomm processor. In this context is also worth mentioning that the facts surrounding those benchmark cheating also explain in part why we have measured in our test reports for Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 is always worse benchmark results with felt the same system performance compared to devices with comparable hardware: Google has simply not necessary to cheat it, and used during the term of the same benchmarks known to be aggressive, but meaningful, throttling mechanisms as for all other apps as well. These mechanisms ensure that after certain periods of high stress the CPU and GPU will be clocked down to limit the power consumption and heat production. Thus, although the fall benchmark results, but these give the everyday performance is better again than the “hochgejazzten” devices the competition.

the equipment manufacturers have made really guilty or use it only the already holey benchmark system to their advantage from? Have benchmarks been used for essentially? Your opinion in the comments.
